Collections and Recovery Jobs: How They Work and Who They Suit
By JobKarle Editorial Team · Published · 2 min read
An honest look at collections careers: what the job is, how conversations should go, the rules to respect, the pressures and how to grow.
The short version
Collections teams help lenders and service providers recover money that customers owe. Done well, it is a respectful problem-solving job. Done badly, it harms customers and the company. Good employers train staff to be firm, fair and compliant.
What the work involves
- Review the account and the customer's payment history.
- Contact the customer by phone, message or visit in line with company policy and the law.
- Understand the reason for non-payment.
- Agree a clear payment plan or option when possible.
- Record the conversation and next action.
- Escalate cases that need legal or senior handling.
Types of collections work
- Early-stage or soft collections: reminders before accounts become seriously overdue
- Late-stage collections: overdue accounts needing negotiation
- Field collections: visits for secured or high-value accounts
- Telecalling-based collections in service centres
Rules and ethics
Lenders are expected to follow regulatory guidelines on how customers are contacted. You must be polite, truthful and respect the customer's dignity. Threats, harassment and misleading statements are not acceptable and can lead to serious consequences. Ask your employer for written policies and training.

Growth
Collections executives can grow into team leader, manager, portfolio or strategy roles, or move into credit, risk and customer service.
