Step-by-step: from application to offer

  1. Decide what you want: voice or non-voice, domestic or international, day or night shift, and your preferred city.
  2. Build a simple one-page resume that lists your education, communication skills, computer skills and any internships or projects.
  3. Search for openings by role and city, such as customer service executive in your city, and read each job description for shift, language and eligibility.
  4. Apply only to jobs that match your skills and availability. Keep your phone number and email correct so recruiters can reach you.
  5. Prepare for a screening call, which usually checks your communication, availability and expected salary.
  6. Attend the assessment rounds described below.
  7. Complete the interview with the operations manager or client.
  8. Review the offer letter carefully before accepting, and complete documents only after you have it.

Typical BPO hiring rounds

The exact process varies by company, but most include some of these.

  • HR screening: basic details, shift flexibility, notice period and salary expectation
  • Language or voice assessment: spoken English or the required language, assessed by recruiters or an automated test
  • Typing or written test: for chat, email and data roles
  • Aptitude or domain test: for finance, banking or technical processes
  • Operations or client interview: situation questions and process fit

How to prepare for the communication round

  1. Practise speaking aloud for 15 minutes a day on simple topics such as your day or your hobbies.
  2. Record yourself and listen for fillers like "um", unclear words and speed.
  3. Speak in short, complete sentences and keep a calm, friendly tone.
  4. Practise a one-minute self-introduction with your education, skills and why you want the job.
  5. Read English news or articles aloud to improve pronunciation and vocabulary.

Common BPO interview questions

  • Tell me about yourself
  • Why do you want to work in a BPO?
  • Are you comfortable with night or rotational shifts?
  • How would you handle an angry customer?
  • What would you do if you did not know the answer to a customer's question?
  • Have you worked with targets before?
  • Where do you see yourself in two or three years?

How to answer the angry customer question

  1. Stay calm and let the customer finish speaking.
  2. Apologise for the inconvenience and show you understand the problem.
  3. Confirm the issue by repeating it in your own words.
  4. Offer a clear solution or next step, and give a realistic time if follow-up is needed.
  5. Escalate to a senior only if the issue is outside your authority.
  6. Confirm that the customer is satisfied and close politely.
