IT Fresher Interview Questions: HR, Aptitude, Coding and Technical Rounds
By JobKarle Editorial Team · Published · 2 min read
What to expect in each round of an IT fresher interview, with real example questions, how to answer them, and a week-long preparation plan.
The short version
Most IT fresher interviews follow the same pattern: an aptitude or coding test, a technical interview, and an HR round. If you prepare for each in a focused way, you remove most of the fear.
The usual rounds
- Online test: aptitude, logical reasoning, English and sometimes basic coding.
- Technical round: questions on your skills, projects and fundamentals.
- Managerial or project round: how you think and how you work with others.
- HR round: communication, expectations, salary, joining and location.
Aptitude and reasoning
Practise percentages, ratios, averages, number series and basic puzzles. Use a timer, skip hard questions and return to them if time is left.
Technical questions you should be ready for
- Explain your best project: why you built it, what was hard and what you would improve
- What is the difference between a list and a dictionary, or an array and a linked list?
- What is object-oriented programming? Give a real example
- What is a database? What is the difference between SQL joins?
- What happens when you type a website address into a browser?
- What is the difference between a process and a thread?
- What are IP address, DNS and DHCP?
- How do you troubleshoot a computer that will not start?
How to answer when you do not know
Say what you do know, explain how you would find out, and stay calm. Interviewers value honesty and a clear thinking process over bluffing.
Coding round tips
- Read the question twice and restate it in your own words.
- Think through an example input and output before you code.
- Write a simple working solution first, then improve it.
- Explain your thinking aloud as you code.
- Test with edge cases such as empty input or one item.
HR round questions
- Tell me about yourself
- Why IT, and why this role?
- What are your strengths and weaknesses?
- Are you willing to relocate or work in shifts?
- Where do you see yourself in three years?
- Do you have any questions for us?
A seven-day preparation plan
- Day 1: Revise your resume line by line and prepare to explain every item.
- Day 2: Practise 20 aptitude questions with a timer.
- Day 3: Revise core concepts of your main language or area.
- Day 4: Solve three easy coding problems and explain them aloud.
- Day 5: Practise your project explanations and self-introduction.
- Day 6: Do a mock interview with a friend and note weak spots.
- Day 7: Rest, check logistics and prepare questions to ask.
