IT Resume for 10+ Years of Experience: What to Cut and What to Highlight
By JobKarle Editorial Team · Published · 2 min read
A senior resume is about impact, not history. Learn how to structure two pages, write achievements that stand out and handle gaps and job changes.
The short version
Recruiters spend seconds on a resume. For a senior candidate, those seconds must show scope, impact and leadership. Two pages is fine at this level, as long as every line earns its place.
The structure
- Header: name, phone, email, city, LinkedIn and a code or portfolio link if relevant.
- Summary: three lines with years of experience, domain, strongest skills and the kind of role you want.
- Key skills: a short grouped list, matched to the job.
- Experience: reverse chronological, with the latest roles in most detail.
- Education and certifications.
- Optional: publications, talks, patents and community work.
Write achievements, not duties
Duty: Responsible for backend services. Achievement: Led a team of six to rebuild the order service, cutting average response time by 40 percent and reducing production incidents each month. Use only numbers that are true and that you can explain.
What to cut
- Old roles beyond 12 to 15 years, or compress them to one line
- Outdated technologies unless relevant
- Long lists of every tool you ever touched
- Photos, personal details and generic objective statements
- Responsibilities everyone in the role has
What to highlight
- Scope: team size, systems size, users, budget
- Results: speed, cost, quality, revenue, reliability
- Leadership: hiring, mentoring, cross-team work
- Recent technologies and learning
- Domain knowledge such as banking, healthcare or retail
Handling job changes and gaps
Be honest and brief. A gap for study, family or a job search can be one line. Show what you learned or built during it. Frequent changes are easier to explain when each role shows progress.
