The short version

Most offers have some room. Negotiating politely and with facts rarely hurts, and it often helps. The goal is a fair package that fits your skills and the role, not a battle.

Before you negotiate

  1. Research typical ranges for your role, city and experience using salary pages, peers and recruiters.
  2. List your strengths, results and in-demand skills.
  3. Decide your minimum, your target and your ideal.
  4. Know your alternatives, such as other offers or staying put.
  5. Practise out loud what you will say.

What to compare besides base pay

  • Variable pay or bonus, and how it is paid
  • Joining bonus and notice-period buyout
  • Insurance, provident fund and other benefits
  • Work mode: office, hybrid or remote
  • Learning budget, growth path and role level
  • Shift allowance, on-call terms and leave

Sample phrases

  • I am excited about the role. Based on my experience and market ranges, I was hoping for a package closer to a higher figure. Is there flexibility?
  • Can you tell me how the variable pay is calculated and what the average payout has been?
  • If the base cannot move, could we look at a joining bonus or an earlier review?

What to avoid

  • Lying about your current pay or other offers
  • Giving ultimatums unless you are ready to walk away
  • Accepting verbally before you see the written offer
  • Negotiating only on emotion instead of facts
  • Ignoring the notice period and any bond or recovery clause

Negotiating a raise in your current job

  1. Collect your results and the market data.
  2. Book a dedicated conversation with your manager.
  3. Present impact first, then the request.
  4. Ask what it would take if the answer is not now.
  5. Follow up in writing and agree a review date.
