Order-to-Cash (O2C) Jobs Explained: Billing, Cash Application, Collections and Disputes
By JobKarle Editorial Team · Published · 2 min read
How a company turns a customer order into cash in the bank, the O2C steps and roles, key terms like DSO and unapplied cash, and how to build a career in this process.
The short version
Order-to-cash, written O2C or OTC, covers everything from a customer placing an order to the company receiving and recording the money. If P2P is how a company spends, O2C is how it earns. Companies care deeply about it because late or missing payments hurt cash flow.
The O2C cycle, step by step
- Order management: the customer order is received, checked and entered, with prices and terms.
- Credit management: the company checks whether the customer can be trusted with credit and sets a limit.
- Fulfilment and delivery: goods are shipped or services delivered.
- Billing: an invoice is created and sent to the customer with the correct amounts and taxes.
- Collections: the team reminds customers about due invoices and follows up on overdue ones.
- Cash application: payments received are matched to the right invoices.
- Dispute and deduction management: reasons for short or delayed payments are investigated and resolved.
- Reporting: ageing, collections and key measures are shared with management.
Terms you will hear
- DSO (days sales outstanding): the average number of days it takes to collect payment after a sale
- Ageing report: invoices grouped by how overdue they are
- Cash application: matching incoming payments with open invoices
- Unapplied cash: money received that has not yet been matched to an invoice
- Short pay and deduction: a customer pays less than invoiced, often with a stated reason
- Credit note: a document that reduces what the customer owes
