The short version

Cloud computing means renting servers, storage and services over the internet instead of owning them. Almost every company now uses the cloud, so cloud skills open doors across support, operations, development and security.

Cloud roles you will see

  • Cloud support associate: helps customers or internal teams with cloud issues
  • Cloud administrator: manages accounts, servers, storage and costs
  • Cloud engineer: builds and automates cloud infrastructure
  • DevOps or site reliability engineer: automates delivery and keeps systems reliable
  • Cloud security engineer: protects cloud resources
  • Cloud architect: designs large cloud solutions

Which provider should you start with?

AWS, Microsoft Azure and Google Cloud are the three major providers. The concepts are similar. Look at job posts in your city and choose the provider that appears most often. If unsure, AWS and Azure have the most listings in many Indian job markets. Learn one deeply, then the others become easier.

Core concepts to master first

  • Compute: virtual machines and containers
  • Storage: object, block and file storage
  • Networking: virtual networks, subnets, security groups
  • Identity and access management
  • Databases: managed relational and NoSQL services
  • Monitoring, logging and billing
  • Infrastructure as code, such as Terraform

A beginner plan

  1. Learn Linux basics and networking fundamentals.
  2. Create a free-tier account and read the provider's introductory material.
  3. Launch a virtual machine, attach storage and connect to it securely.
  4. Host a static website and then a small application.
  5. Set up a budget alert so you never pay by surprise.
  6. Learn one automation tool and describe your setup as code.
  7. Consider a foundational certification once you have hands-on practice.

Watch out for cost

Always set billing alerts and delete resources when you finish practising. Beginners sometimes leave services running and get unexpected bills.
