The short version

A certification is a signal, not a substitute for skill. It helps most when it matches a job description, and least when it is collected randomly. Check what employers ask for before you spend money or time.

Examples by role

These are examples that appear often in job posts. Syllabi, costs and names change over time, so check current details with each certifying organisation.

  • IT support: entry-level certifications such as CompTIA A+, or vendor support certificates
  • Networking: Cisco CCNA, CompTIA Network+
  • Cloud: foundational and associate certifications from AWS, Microsoft Azure or Google Cloud
  • Security: CompTIA Security+, and later advanced security certifications
  • System administration: Linux and Microsoft administrator certifications
  • Project and delivery: Scrum or Agile certifications, and project management certifications
  • IT service management: ITIL foundation

How to decide if a certification is worth it

  1. Read twenty job descriptions for the role you want and note which certifications repeat.
  2. Check the current exam syllabus, cost and renewal rules.
  3. Check whether you can practise the skills in a free lab.
  4. Plan study time and an exam date.
  5. After passing, add hands-on proof such as a lab or project.

Red flags

  • Courses that guarantee a job in return for a fee
  • Training providers that ask for payment to arrange interviews
  • Exam dumps. They are dishonest and employers can tell
  • Collecting many entry-level certificates instead of learning deeply
