The short version

Technical support engineers help customers or users solve technical problems with a product or service. It is one of the best ways to enter IT because you learn how real systems fail, and you build communication skills that carry through your whole career.

What the job involves

  1. Receive a ticket, call or chat from a customer.
  2. Understand the problem by asking the right questions.
  3. Reproduce the issue if possible and check logs or settings.
  4. Apply a fix or a workaround, or escalate to a specialist with clear notes.
  5. Confirm that the customer's problem is solved.
  6. Document the fix so others can reuse it.

Technical support engineer vs service desk

  • Service desk: usually supports internal employees with everyday IT issues such as passwords, laptops and email
  • Technical support engineer: often supports customers of a software or hardware product, with deeper troubleshooting
  • Both use ticketing tools and clear communication, and both can lead to the same senior paths

Skills employers look for

  • Clear spoken and written English
  • Structured troubleshooting and patience
  • Operating systems: Windows, macOS and Linux basics
  • Networking basics: IP, DNS, Wi-Fi
  • Knowledge of the product area: software, SaaS, hardware or cloud
  • Ticketing and remote support tools
  • SQL or scripting for senior roles

Interview questions

  • A customer says the application is slow. What do you do?
  • How do you handle an angry customer?
  • What steps would you take if a PC will not boot?
  • What is the difference between DNS and DHCP?
  • How do you prioritise multiple tickets?
  • When do you escalate a ticket?
